With the United States divided, It’s hard not to follow along with the crazy soap-opera that is the 2020 election. Normally politics isn’t my cup of tea, but I’ve been watching CNN (and the occasional Fox News) for over three years. It’s gotten to the point that I couldn’t name anything going on in Canada but could tell you the breaking news from The States.
I would like to start off by acknowledging that I support Biden, but I am always open to a debate if you support Trump. The democrats would be beneficial to Canadians because they would remove the “America First” policy that Trump has often talked about. Apart from that, I don’t believe Trump has a strong moral compass (no politician does, really.) and I find that his child-like attitude about losing the election is really unprofessional. I don’t admire the fact that his supporters think “Trump 2020” is a valid response in an argument (what are his supporters going to say now that he has lost the election?), and I generally don’t agree with republican values. I could go on about this list but that would be best for its own post.
Almost every influencer has said something about voting, no matter their political views. And everyone did vote. The numbers were astronomically high compared to the 2016 election, which is a great step to maintaining the US democracy. The only thing causing it to crumble is Trump’s refusal to concede, congratulate, or even accept the election results. He has been gaslighting his followers into believing some crazy voter fraud conspiracy theory that has no evidence, and the worst part is that he started months before the actual election. Unwilling to pay for the lawsuits costs (yes, he’s going to the supreme court just because he didn’t win), he created the Election Defense Task Force fundraiser, to make people pay for the lost cause that is his victory. The first lady has even begged him to concede, but his agenda goes far beyond that. Many people are worried about the fact that there may not be a peaceful transfer.
Soon after Joe became the President Elect and Kamala the Vice President Elect (First woman and poc!), both of them gave an unforgettable speech. I watched it live in my living room and I definitely won’t forget the feeling I had when he won. There was hope again, even though the other half of the population had voted for Trump. Personally, the highlight of Biden’s speech is when he said,
“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but unify. Who doesn’t see red states and blue states, only sees the United States.”
Joe Biden
I still think about this quote sometimes 🙂
As a final topic, I would like to discuss Trump’s usage of the term “Radical Lefts”. He constantly uses that term to describe Democrats, even though it is very incorrect. Yes, the democratic party is more ‘left’ than the republicans, but it is still right of the center. Biden isn’t even on the left side of the spectrum, yet Trump is calling them radical and extreme. They act like socialism is a crime, yet it would do many great things for their country.
I’m excited to see the results of the run-offs in January and the days leading to and after Biden’s inauguration. This election has been one heck of a roller coaster and the drama seems to keep on coming. I can’t wait to add onto this post in January! See you then!
